Accessing Our Service - Technology Requirements

ProblemShared is an entirely online service. This means you'll need access to some basic technology to attend your appointments and use our services.

This article explains the technology you'll need and how to get ready for your appointments.

 

Only have a smartphone?

You'll need to have access to a suitable device to complete our forms and be assessed by our service. The good news is that you don't have to own a suitable device yourself - you just need regular access to one.

Many of our clients are able to borrow a suitable device from a close friend or family member. Alternatively, you can check with your local library for computer or printer access to complete the forms.

Access to a suitable device is really important for using our service, and we cannot carry out your assessment without it.

 

What do I need?

To access your sessions, you'll need:

  • A stable, private internet connection
  • Access to Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge browsers
  • A suitable desktop device on which to access the platform and sessions
  • Headphones for reliable and clear audio

We'd recommend using a desktop device for completing all your forms, accessing service resources, and downloading your reports as well. This is preferrable over the use of a smartphone because many phones are not compatible with PDF document types.

 

What is a ‘suitable desktop device’?

A suitable desktop device would include one of the following:

  • A laptop with a built-in or attachable camera
  • A PC/computer with an attachable camera
  • A tablet larger than 10” in diameter that can be propped up and used hands-free

For assessments for Specific Learning Differences (SpLD), you will need a laptop to join the session and a tablet to complete some tasks. Headphones should also be used to enable clear audio. These requirements are according to guidance from the SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC).

 

Why can’t I use my phone?

You cannot use a smartphone for the assessment or any other video consultation.

Smartphones are not a suitable device for your assessment because they do not facilitate our clinician’s ability to observe and assess you accurately. Furthermore, phones can also provide distractions and interruptions to the assessment itself.
